Orin Dunham Jr.

United States Army Sergeant First Class Orin Dunham Jr. tragically passed away on July 11, 2020, due to a heart attack stemming from service-connected hypertensive cardiovascular disease.

Dunham Jr., one of five children, grew up in a small town with a strong desire to explore the world. He enlisted in the military on October 15, 1986. During his service, he was granted several accolades, including the Iraq Campaign Medal with four campaign stars, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal (three).

While stationed in the same unit, Dunham Jr. met his future wife, Sherrise. She recalls him stating in 2003 that he intended to marry her, a claim she dismissed with a laugh, saying, “that would never happen.” They married on April 13, 2009, and often shared a laugh about the story. One of their most amusing memories involves their son, Denzel, at one year old. He was having a blue slushy. Sherrise cautioned Dunham Jr. against holding Denzel upside down like an airplane while he was lying on his back. When he continued to do so, their son promptly covered him in blue slushy, sparking shared laughter. That lighthearted moment perfectly captured the joy and strong family bond.

Known for his outstanding leadership and genuine commitment to the well-being of every soldier under his command, Dunham Jr. created an environment where each person was treated with the same care and respect one would show to family. His personal approach earned him the lasting trust and loyalty of those he led. At home, he was an exceptional provider who possessed a strong sense of responsibility and worked tirelessly to ensure his family’s needs were always met. His legacy continues to live on through his family, as they lovingly honor his memory each year on his birthday and the anniversary of his passing, celebrating the profound love and lasting impact he had on their lives.

United States Army Sergeant First Class Orin Dunham Jr. is survived by his loving wife, Sherrise, their beautiful children, Dominique and Denzel, and his beloved stepson, Bryan.The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has provided the Dunham family with a mortgage-free home through the Gold Star Family Home Program.
