United States Army Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: July 14, 2024

United States Army Sergeant Jamal Nafiz Salaam tragically passed away on July 14, 2024, after a courageous fight with service-related cancer.

Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Salaam enlisted in the military seeking a change of environment and personal development. Before his service, he attended Berkeley College, where he also played collegiate basketball, further showcasing his discipline, teamwork, and determination. Throughout his military career, he consistently made a significant impact within every organization he served, inspiring soldiers to emulate his leadership qualities. Colleagues described him as highly intelligent, resilient, consistently adhering to standards, and a “hard-charging Platoon Sergeant” who always seemed to possess a clear understanding of the appropriate course of action in every situation. During his distinguished career, he earned numerous accolades, including the Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal,, Army Service Ribbon, Silver Basic Recruiter Badge, and Tracked Vehicle Clasp.

Salaam was unstoppable, regardless of the circumstances—a truth his fellow soldiers witnessed time and again. While serving as a 19K (tanker), Salaam sustained broken ribs during a rollover incident in a field exercise—an injury that makes even breathing difficult. Not long after, his company was required to complete a physical training test (PT test), consisting of two minutes of push-ups, two minutes of sit-ups, and a two-mile run. Salaam was known for always finishing first in the run, but on this occasion, he came in second—surpassed only by his best friend and battle buddy, and only because of his injuries. They would often laugh about this moment later, a story that highlighted Salaam’s remarkable tenacity. He was indomitable, regardless of the circumstances.

Salaam met his future wife, Shakima, in 2016 while they were both stationed at Fort Riley. She was drawn to his warm and caring nature, describing him as a deeply loving man. One of their most cherished moments was the birth of their son on October 3, 2020 a joyful milestone that forever changed their lives. She also fondly recalls their unforgettable trip to the Bahamas, filled with laughter and love. A memory that remains etched in her heart is Salaam standing proudly by her side at her Radiology Program graduation, his unwavering support and pride shining through despite the toll cancer had taken on his body—a testament to his love, strength, and extraordinary spirit.

Even in the face of a terminal illness, Salaam found light in the situation. He remained an active father, loving husband, and a constant ball of energy, despite the pain he endured. The legacy he leaves behind continues to shine, resilient even through the toughest times. Shakima will set aside a special space in her home to honor Salaam, filling it with his photos, military achievements, and awards as a lasting tribute to his life and legacy.

United States Army Sergeant Jamal Nafiz Salaam is survived by his loving wife, Shakima, and their beautiful son, Nafiz.
