United States Army Sergeant Joshua J. Strickland heroically lost his life on September 21, 2013, amid an insider attack during a training exercise in Afghanistan.

In 2008, Strickland enlisted in the United States Army as a wheeled vehicle mechanic, a role that laid the foundation for his hands-on contributions to the Army’s operational readiness. After completing basic training, where he gained the discipline and skills required of a soldier, he advanced to specialized training and became proficient in the maintenance and repair of essential military vehicles. Through his service, Strickland discovered immense pride and purpose, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to his career and earning the love and respect of many.

Upon the culmination of his rigorous training, Strickland received his first assignment. He was stationed with the Group Service Support Company, a vital component of the Group Support Battalion within the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne). This placement underscored his critical role in ensuring that the highly specialized units of the 1st SFG (A) had the logistical and mechanical support necessary for their demanding missions. During his service, he was recognized with several decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal, the NATO Medal, and the Combat Action Badge. Most notably, he was awarded the prestigious Purple Heart.

In April 2010, Strickland married the love of his life, Heather. Together, they built a loving home filled with joy, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. Strickland lived a life full of passion, humor, and devotion, always making sure Heather and their family felt how deeply he cared for them. Though his life was tragically short, lasting only 23 years, his warmth and spirit left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
