United States Navy Petty Officer • Line of Duty Death: November 9, 2024
United States Navy Petty Officer Eugene M. Hourican tragically passed away on November 9, 2024, from service-connected heart disease.
Hourican, a vibrant and energetic individual, was born and raised on Staten Island, New York. He was the fourth of seven children, growing up in a lively household. From a young age, Eugene was known for his mischievous spirit and boundless energy, which he channeled into various activities, including softball, bowling, and darts. As he got older, his boundless energy was primarily fueled by a genuine desire to help others. He was always ready to lend a hand, often saying with a smile, ‘Don’t worry, I know a guy.’ That simple phrase captured so much of who he was. Someone deeply committed to staying connected, always looking out for others, and nurturing the relationships he valued throughout his life. His zest for life left an impression on everyone who knew him.
With a strong sense of purpose, on November 10, 1986, Hourican enlisted in the Navy. He joined the military driven by a desire to defend freedom, explore the world, and foster that sense of purpose through serving others and the country he proudly called home. During his tenure, he formed deep, lasting friendships that remained invaluable throughout his life. While he enjoyed traveling, his true passion lay in providing medical care for infants and children, as well as actively engaging in search and rescue missions. His distinguished service was recognized with the following commendations: Navy Fleet Marine Force Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Southwest Asian Service Medal (1 star), Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal.
Eugene met his wife, Maureen, through mutual friends, but it was at his sister’s wedding surrounded by laughter and celebration that their connection truly deepened. That special day laid the foundation for a life filled with love, mutual respect, and shared purpose. Together, they built a close-knit family rooted in joy and devotion. Eugene had a deep affection for his family, cherishing Maureen and their twin daughters, Caelee and Devynn. His pride in being a father was evident in everything he did from coaching and driving the girls to their activities, to being a constant, supportive presence in their lives. Eugene and Maureen approached parenting as a team, celebrating every milestone side by side.
Family is also the heart of Maureen’s life, and together with Eugene, she created a home full of warmth and meaningful traditions. Whether it was beach days, cozy Hallmark movie nights, or working on DIY projects around their New Jersey home, they embraced the simple joys of being together. Their shared faith played a central role in their lives, with both Maureen and Eugene raising their daughters in the community of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. The traditions they built together continue to live on. Maureen and the girls honor his memory in their everyday lives, carrying forward the love, faith, and sense of togetherness that defined their family.
United States Navy Petty Officer Eugene M. Hourican is survived by his loving wife, Maureen, and their beautiful daughters, Caelee and Devynn.
