Born in Ardmore, Oklahoma and raised in the nearby rural town of Wilson, United States Army Sergeant Michael Shane Ayres grew up surrounded by open fields, hard work, and strong southern values. As the eldest of three boys, he learned early what it meant to shoulder responsibility. Life on the family farm was demanding—sunup to sundown chores, livestock care, and the kind of labor that builds character, but it was also rich with love, faith, and the simple joys of country living.
Ayres’ childhood was steeped in the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, and tearing up back roads with friends were more than pastimes—they were a way of life. He excelled in school, proudly showed animals at livestock exhibitions through Future Farmers of America, and lived by the principles instilled by his parents: work hard, never quit, and always put God first.
When the Twin Towers fell in 2001, Ayres was still in high school. The tragedy stirred something deep within him—a desire to serve, to protect, and to make a difference. In December 2004, he answered that call and joined the United States Army. It was, in his words, “the best decision I ever made.”
Ayres served most of his military career overseas, embracing the opportunity to experience different cultures and broaden his worldview. As a Cavalry Scout, he was deployed to Ramadi, Iraq (2005–2006) with the 1st Armored Division, and to COP Lowell/Keating, Afghanistan (2008–2009) with the 1st Infantry Division. His bravery and dedication earned him the Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Action Badge, and the prestigious Bronze Star.
Life took an unexpected turn when Ayres was involved in a catastrophic vehicle rollover, resulting in a spinal cord injury that left him a quadriplegic. Despite the immense physical and emotional challenges, his spirit remained unshaken. He found a new purpose in fatherhood, raising his daughter, Jadyn, with the same love for the outdoors that shaped his own youth. Together, they hunt, fish, and explore nature—cherishing every moment under the open sky.
Ayres credits Tunnel to Towers for helping restore his independence through home modifications and financial support, allowing him to focus on what matters most: his family, his future, and his continued journey of resilience.
United States Army Sergeant Michael Shane Ayres’ message to others is simple but profound: Believe in yourself and never give up.
