Injured U.S. Army Veteran Receives Mortgage-Free Smart Home
Join the Tunnel to Towers Foundation as we welcome home Army Captain Ken Kraft
MULINO, OREGON [February 19, 2025] — On Wednesday, February 19, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation will welcome Army Captain Ken Kraft into his new mortgage-free smart home in Mulino, Oregon.
“This gift from Tunnel to Towers allows me to thrive. It gives me the chance to focus on living the best life I can with my family and enjoy every day,” said CPT Kraft.
CPT Kraft was born and raised in Oregon and joined the Oregon Army National Guard in November 1987. Army commercials asking young men and women to “be all you can be” were a massive motivator for CPT Kraft to join the service. He later transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve and volunteered to be deployed to Iraq after the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.
While in Baghdad, CPT Kraft was injured by an unexpected mortar attack. Once he returned home, he underwent nearly 50 surgeries on his knees, back, and chest, resulting in an above-the-knee amputation of his right leg.
After his overseas service, CPT Kraft served as the Oregon Department Commander for Veterans of Foreign Wars.
CPT Kraft has been living in Tennessee but is looking forward to returning to his home state of Oregon to be with his family. His three adult children, 12 grandchildren, and his mother reside nearby.
CPT Kraft added, “The grandkids are so excited to see the new house and spend time with me there. It’s going to be our gathering place for all the holidays.”
The Tunnel to Towers Smart Home Program builds specially adapted, mortgage-free smart homes or renovates existing homes to help our most catastrophically injured veterans and first responders reclaim their day-to-day independence.
These homes feature zero thresholds, motorized doors, and keyless entry for easier access. The homes’ lights, temperature, security, and sound system can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app or touch screens throughout the house. Wide doors, hallways, and bathrooms are designed for easy navigation.
