New York City Department of Corrections, New York • Line of Duty Death: March 5, 2016

New York City Department of Corrections Correction Officer Jonathan Latta passed away on March 5, 2016 while in the line of duty.

Latta was born and raised in Staten Island, New York. He was very athletic during his youth, having played basketball and baseball, as well as being an avid runner. He was also interested in physical fitness and caring for his overall health. Later, Latta met his wife, Kristina, at the recreation center he was a member of and where Kristina worked as a NYC Park Officer. The pair shared an instant connection and were later married.

Awaiting the arrival of his second child, Latta joined NYC Corrections in 2007 with the intention of providing for his family. Having been a natural leader, Latta loved to help others and prided himself on taking new officers under his wing. His goals were to move up the ranks and join the inspector’s office to investigate corruption within the department. Latta took the Captains Exam, was accepted, and put on a waiting list for the role, however, his premature death superseded the opportunity.

Kristina and her children have recently moved into the Foundation’s Let Us Do Good Village in Land ‘O Lakes, Florida. In her free time, she is looking forward to getting to know her new community and will continue to volunteer with her children’s new schools. Kristina is eternally grateful to Tunnel to Towers for providing her with the gift of a mortgage-free home.

Correction Officer Jonathan Latta is survived by his loving wife, Kristina, his children, Jessica and Jonathan, and his step-daughter, Debra.
