On Friday night, the FDNY Boxing Club squared off against members of the Atlanta Police and Fire Department at the eighth annual Thrilla in Camilla. In the parking lot of St. Camillus church in Rockaway Beach, NY, 10 bouts of exciting amateur boxing occurred.
The Club is composed of active-duty members of the FDNY and EMS, who train on their own time. Established in 1982, FDNY Boxing has spent 40 years raising funds for worthwhile charities through spirited competition. Their motto is, “We will fight anyone, anywhere, anytime, as long as it’s for a good cause.” The FDNY Boxing Club’s willingness to fight on behalf of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation made the event a worthwhile experience for all who participated and attended.
Featured fights between fighters like Yonkers Firefighter, Chris Paladino, of “Battle of the Badges” vs Atlanta Police Officer, Chris Mayers, and Rockaway’s own Firefighter Danny Quinn vs Atlanta Police Officer, Shaun Johnson were described as must-see bouts by audience members. The FDNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums also provided entertainment for attendees of the event.
From the proceeds of this event, a donation of $50,000 was presented to benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s programs.
