United States Marine Corps Sergeant Adam D. Mayo was born in Fort Worth, Texas and grew up in Springtown, Texas along with his two brothers. His parents were very hard-working and provided the best life they could to their three boys. They were great role models to Mayo and his brothers. Mayo’s father worked 60+ hours per week to provide for his family while his mother stayed at home to raise him and his brothers. In addition to this, Mayo’s mother attended school to become a nurse, which she achieved when Mayo was 16 years old. During his childhood, Mayo could be found riding bikes with his amazing friends around the neighborhood. He also loved helping his grandfather work on cars. Mayo met his wife, Jasmine, through her sister, whom he attended school with. They have been together and happily in love for 17 years and have three beautiful children together, Brock, Bently, and Brooklyn.Â
In April of 2005, Mayo decided to pursue something meaningful for himself and for others and decided to join the USMC. He served seven-and-a-half prideful years serving in VMGR 352 and VMGR 234 units, as well as two times in Iraq and once in Afghanistan. He loved the camaraderie in the military as well as traveling, serving, and doing something worth-while. His aspirations after retirement from the USMC included joining a federal law enforcement agency.Â
While on a training deployment in Thailand, Mayo was separated from other Marines, where he unfortunately had his neck hit and twisted several times. He was not found for several hours, where it was ultimately discovered that he sustained injuries to his C5 vertebrae. Because of this, he was left paralyzed from the chest down, as well as in his hands. Recovery for Mayo was very tough as he spent four months in a hospital, followed by two years in outpatient therapy gaining as much strength as possible.Â
Despite this, Mayo remains positive. Currently, Mayo and his family live in Azle, Texas. He enjoys brewing beer with his friend, as well as participating in minor woodworking projects. He loves being involved in anything that his children love, which are baseball, soccer, and gymnastics. Mayo is also finishing up his political science degree at Texas Christian University and hopes to pursue law school afterwards. In his community, Mayo volunteers at a Brothers Keepers, a nonprofit organization that helps injured veterans and first responders. With the support of his family and loved ones, Mayo is sure he will succeed in anything and everything he puts his mind to. He is immensely passionate about helping others.Â
In the future, Mayo is most excited to continue to watch his children grow as they become their own individuals. He is also anxious to grow old with his wife and enjoy life with each other. Upon receiving a smart home from Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Mayo and his family have a huge financial burden lifted off of their shoulders. Mayo is eternally grateful for the Foundation constantly reaching out to check on his family and making them feel loved and cared for.Â
