Chief Hal “Matt” Hanenkrath died in the line of duty on June 27
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is honored to announce it will be paying off the mortgage on the home of fallen South Richland Fire Chief Hal “Matt” Hanenkrath.
On Tuesday, June 27, 2023, Chief Hanenkrath was at the scene of a fire when he started experiencing shortness of breath and chest pains. He was rushed to the hospital where he passed away from a pulmonary embolism.
Chief Hanenkrath served his community in several roles, as Fire Chief for South Richland Volunteer Fire Department, Assistant Chief for Highland Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Director for the Defiance County 911 Communications Center.
Matt is survived by his loving wife Ashley and his three children.
