It’s hard to believe that today’s elementary students, and even some high school students, were born after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. For those of us old enough to remember the day’s events, the images and sounds are forever engraved in our memories. These memories fuel our passion to Never Forget the sacrifices made and the innocent lives lost. But, what about those who do not have memories of the day? How do we ensure that future generations carry on this important vow to Never Forget?
Amidst the organized chaos that the staff at the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is accustomed to during the month of September, we received a very thoughtful package from the students at Franklin Elementary School in Rahway, New Jersey. Enclosed were a number of letters written by the students, ranging in age from four to twelve, on the anniversary of September 11, 2001. Each note was a reflection from the students based on what they know about the day, as well as words of gratitude for the first responders who responded the attacks on the Twin Towers and for those who continue to put their lives on the line each day.
The letters have helped to restore our faith that younger generations will carry the torch to Never Forget. We extend our gratitude to the schools that are taking the time to reflect on and teach about September 11, 2001 on the anniversary each year. In a letter from Principal Gavin, she explains her school’s motives for engaging the students in the note writing activity…..
“Keeping in mind that these children, ages 4-12, were not born yet on September 11, 2001, I think it is important for them to know, respect, and appreciate our police officers, firefighters, and first responders.”
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation could not agree more. Principal Gavin, and all those at Franklin Elementary School, share in the Foundation’s mission to support first responders. We are grateful for the support. Thank you to all of the students at Franklin Elementary School in Rahway, New Jersey for thinking of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation on September 11, 2001, and for sharing these thoughtful words with us. What a wonderful, uplifting surprise to receive during a very difficult month. Thank you for making the vow to Never Forget.
