Born in Houston, Texas, and raised in Utah, Patrick Ryan Shaw grew up with a spirit in motion. Childhood was a whirlwind of skateboards, soccer balls, snowboards, and spontaneous backyard games with siblings and neighborhood friends. Shaw embraced the outdoors with a passion that would follow him throughout life.
From a young age, Shaw dreamed of serving. In 2014, he made that dream real by enlisting in the United States Army. He served with honor in the 2ABCT, 1st Infantry Division, deploying to the Middle East in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. His journey continued with the 1-37 FA Regiment, 1SBCT, 2nd ID at Fort Lewis, Washington.
Shaw thrived in the Army. He found meaning in the camaraderie, the discipline, and the opportunity to be a leader. He deployed alongside the Marine Corps and Navy, earning an award with them for his service in Iraq. He took every class available, determined to build skills that would serve him in civilian life.
But the cost of service was steep. Shaw endured multiple traumatic brain injuries, exposure to burn pits, and other hazards that would later manifest as neurological issues. Eventually, he was diagnosed with ALS—a life-altering moment that arrived just as he was beginning a new chapter with his girlfriend, Aubrey. She’s been by his side ever since, a constant source of love and strength.
Recovery has been a journey of resilience. Shaw turned to nature once again, relearning to fly fish and becoming a guide with his family’s business. He found peace in the rivers and solace in the mountains. Today, he faces each day with courage, supported by a devoted caregiving team that includes his mother, stepfather, siblings, niece, and nephew, in addition to Aubrey. His two loyal golden retrievers, Honey and Hazel, are always by his side.
Despite the physical limitations, Shaw remains deeply involved in veteran outreach. He has helped organize rides and events in Idaho and hopes to expand to Las Vegas. His mission is clear: to connect, uplift, and serve his fellow veterans.
Tunnel to Towers’ remodeling of Shaw’s home to meet his evolving needs includes eye-gaze technology, wheelchair accessibility, and smart features to restore his sense of independence. The heavy burden of a mortgage has also been lifted by T2T, allowing Shaw’s family to focus on care and healing. They are all extremely grateful for this gift.
Through it all, Patrick Ryan Shaw has learned to embrace the now, believing that every day is a gift, every connection a blessing. His story is one of service, sacrifice, and unbreakable spirit—a reminder that even in the face of adversity, purpose and love endure.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has provided Patrick Ryan Shaw with a mortgage-free smart home through the Smart Home Program.
