HOME COMPLETED - AUGUST 2025

United States Army Master Sergeant Luis Morales hails from Northern Virginia and volunteered for military service shortly after high school, joining the Army to become an Airborne Ranger. He married his high school sweetheart, Kathryne, and together they have three children. Throughout his 20-year career, Morales served in several Special Operations Command units, ultimately retiring as a Special Forces Master Sergeant. Reflecting on his journey, Morales often says, “I grew up a Ranger and matured a Green Beret.”

Morales deployed twice to Afghanistan as a member of 3rd Special Forces Group ODA 3336. During his 2007-2008 deployment, his team worked closely with Afghan Commandos, and in April 2008, they found themselves engaged in a fierce battle that earned numerous valor awards, including ten Silver Stars (two of which were upgraded to the Medal of Honor) and one Air Force Cross. Morales was awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart after being shot twice in the right leg while saving a teammate’s life.

After enduring two years of limb salvage and recovery, Morales ultimately had his leg amputated. Rather than being defeated, he channeled his competitive spirit into adaptive physical activities, including completing the Boston Marathon on a handcycle just months after the amputation. Two years later, after relearning how to run, he discovered a passion for para-triathlon, which provided both physical therapy and a sense of purpose. He lives according to the belief that when you want to be or do something that looks difficult, don’t quit – try, practice, do.

Morales has also reignited his love for golf, finding therapeutic value in the sport. He is actively involved in the Veteran Golfers Association that helps support fellow veterans, combining his passion for the game with a desire to give back to the veteran community.

Morales is deeply grateful for the support from Tunnel to Towers and its incredible impact on his family.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has provided United States Master Sergeant Luis Morales with a mortgage-free smart home through the Smart Home Program.
