United States Army Staff Sergeant Cody Chism was born in Houma, Louisiana and raised across the rural landscapes of West Baton Rouge Parish, Perry, and Milton, Florida. He grew up immersed in the outdoors, shaped by the rhythms of small-town life—hunting, fishing, and long weekends spent on his father’s farm. There, Chism learned the value of hard work, a lesson that would become a cornerstone of his character.
Summers in Louisiana with his Cajun family introduced him to a vibrant culture filled with laughter, water, and unforgettable food. With a big, boisterous extended family, life was never quiet—but always full. Chism’s love for craftsmanship emerged early, especially in his passion for restoring classic cars. He met his wife, Vanessa, in the fifth grade. Their friendship blossomed into love during high school, and together they’ve built a bond that has been a constant through every chapter of their journey.
In October 2003, driven by the legacy of his grandparents’ military service and a profound sense of duty following the events of 9/11, Chism enlisted in the United States Army. He served with distinction at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 1/1 United States Armored Cavalry, the 272nd MP Company, and the 95th MP Battalion. He loved the sense of duty in the military, as well as the camaraderie, friendships, and unique brotherhood.
As a Combat Medic, Chism treated countless soldiers, both in and out of combat, rising through the ranks faster than many of his peers. His deployment to a combat zone in 2008 marked a personal milestone, fulfilling one of his deepest aspirations. But that same year, a violent jolt during a combat patrol left him unconscious, and exposure to open-air burn pits and repeated proximity to explosions began to take a toll on his health.
Years later, Chism was diagnosed with PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), epilepsy, and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES). His recovery was long and complex, and many conditions went undiagnosed for years. A move back to the DMV area finally brought clarity and access to better healthcare.
Through it all, Vanessa remained by his side—his unwavering partner in the fight for healing. Though Chism can no longer hunt or fish independently, he still finds joy in these lifelong hobbies, as well as some new ones, including caring for the horses and cows on his property and volunteering in his community. Each year, he contributes to the FFA hog butchering event that supports the local high school, and he’s a familiar face at his youngest daughter’s Catholic school. Chism most enjoys spending time with Vanessa and their children – Gavin, Sophia, and Caroline – as well as extended family and friends. He is hopeful for the future.
The support from Tunnel to Towers has been transformative, providing home modifications that allow Chism to maintain independence and peace of mind. The assistance has lifted financial burdens and ensured that his family will always have a place to call home.
Despite the hardships, Chism’s love for his country remains unshaken. He reflects on his service with pride and conviction, stating that he would sign up again—even knowing the outcome. For United States Army Staff Sergeant Cody Chism, freedom is worth the cost, and his life stands as a testament to courage, sacrifice, and the enduring strength of family.
