United States Army Specialist Christian Avila Taveras learned from an early age the importance of kindness and resilience. As a boy, he developed a deep curiosity for science and the arts. In elementary school, he was captivated by astronomy, finding comfort in the vastness and mystery of the universe. By middle school, he discovered a passion for Greek mythology, immersing himself in stories that fueled his imagination. Alongside his academic interests, he embraced salsa dancing, even competing in local events.
During high school, Taveras’ love for mathematics, music, and dance flourished. He became a math tutor, learned the flute, and pursued classical ballet—a discipline he continued for twelve years until just before joining the military. His musical journey later transitioned from flute to piano, while his academic dedication led him to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mathematics after his service.
Taveras enlisted in the United States Army in November of 2017, inspired by the stories of service members who sacrificed for their families’ futures. Deeply moved by their commitment, he chose to serve as a Combat Medic, determined to help others and reunite families through his work. Within his unit, he thrived in the community’s sense of purpose and growth mindset. He led a musculoskeletal injuries course for fellow medics, deescalated tense situations, boosted morale, and earned an Army Commendation Medal for his contributions.
Taveras’ military career was profoundly shaped by a life-altering event: a vehicle rollover accident that left him pinned beneath a 577 track vehicle. He sustained severe lower-body polytrauma, resulting in the amputation of his left leg above the knee and limb salvage of his right leg, which left him with limited mobility and nerve damage. Despite these challenges, he continues to embody resilience and determination
Beyond his military service, Taveras remains deeply engaged in the arts and nature. He has returned to piano lessons, enjoys visiting botanical gardens to study native plants, and has recently taken up birdwatching. He is a devoted patron of the theater, attending ballet, orchestral performances, choral music, and musicals. His future aspirations include learning French, exploring plant-based cooking, and baking his own bread.
Taveras credits the support of Tunnels to Towers with providing him with peace of mind. He is grateful for the financial relief of a mortgage-free home and emphasizes that the greatest gift is the sense of safety and comfort the home brings.
