United States Marine Corps Corporal • Line of Duty Death: October 29, 2023

United States Marine Corps Corporal Ryan David Ward tragically lost his life on October 29, 2023, from service-connected cancer.

Ward was born in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1989 to Brenda Oaks and David Ward. He grew up in a large family alongside his brother, Christopher, and four sisters: Kayleen, Nichole, Brendinha, and Brianna. His early years were marked by several family moves, which fostered his adaptability and passion for sports, sparking a lifelong love for the Denver Broncos in Colorado, and later developing a deep interest in football and baseball while playing for Farmington schools in Arkansas. Settling in Arizona during his sophomore year, Ward attended Dysart High School, where he became a three year varsity football player, competing as a linebacker, contributing on special teams, and playing wide receiver. He also excelled on the baseball field, pitching for the varsity team and throwing a no hitter in his senior year. Demonstrating commitment both academically and athletically, Ward graduated Magna Cum Laude just weeks before embarking on his military journey to boot camp in San Diego, California.

A deeply held, lifelong aspiration to serve in the military defined Ward from an early age, a fact shared by his mother with his wife, Danielle. The catastrophic events of September 11th became a pivotal and enduring catalyst, solidifying his resolve to answer the call to service. That day cemented a desire to actively contribute to the defense of the United States, dedicating himself to ensuring the continued safety and security of the nation. After completing service in the Marines, the same dedication, discipline, and leadership carried over into a deeply impactful career as a teacher and football coach. It quickly became evident that the role extended far beyond coaching; Ward became a devoted mentor to countless students and athletes, consistently going above and beyond to support them. His commitment helped guide a football team to not one, but two state championships. Following his passing, Danielle received an outpouring of heartfelt emails from both students and their parents, all sharing how profoundly Ward had touched their lives.

Ward met his wife, Danielle, at an away football game. He was a new student who hadn’t yet made the team, Ward took a seat beside Danielle in the stands, and what began as a simple moment quickly grew into a lifelong connection. Their relationship deepened as they grew up together, rooted in a common dream: raising their children on a piece of land they could truly call their own. Through years of commitment and hard work, that dream became a reality. Danielle proudly reflects on this accomplishment. One of her most cherished memories is Ward’s graduation from the Marine Corps, when she lifted their daughter high so Ward could see her for the first time since leaving for boot camp. She will always remember the simple, joyful moments, like Ward singing and dancing in the kitchen as they cooked Sunday breakfast and sipped coffee. Another treasured memory is the first time they saw their new house. As the family reached the top of the long driveway, they eagerly piled out of the car. He immediately ran and jumped onto the tire swing, his happiness palpable and shared by the whole family.

Ward’s legacy lives on through his children: Jordan, Brayden, Ryan Jr., Levi, and Oakley. He poured his heart and soul into his family, teaching them to be good people, to work hard, and to always love and support one another. A hardworking man, he embodied the saying, “If you want it, you can have it—you just have to work hard.” Integrity and kindness guided his life, and he never hesitated to show up for family and friends when they needed him. Danielle knows their children are inspired by both his accomplishments and the fearless way he approached life. He truly lived life to the fullest.

Ward embodied a fearlessly determined spirit, always striving to achieve the goals he set for himself. Along the way, he pursued diverse careers and hobbies, fulfilling many ambitions, including becoming a certified deep-sea diver and playing college football after his Marine service. Ward’s family honors his memory every day by embracing life to the fullest. They share his wisdom, reflecting on his advice and striving to live in ways that would make him proud. Knowing he would have cherished a front-row seat to their growth, they actively pursue their passions, explore new hobbies, and chase their dreams. Were he here today, he would undoubtedly be chasing an even bigger dream and trying new things—and so his family carries forward that same spirit. His wife and children dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to their pursuits, setting ambitious goals and working to achieve them. Each day is lived guided by the knowledge that Ward would want them to embrace life fully, boldly, and without hesitation.

United States Marine Corps Corporal Ryan David Ward is survived by his loving wife, Danielle; their beautiful children, Jordan, Braylen, Ryan, Levi, and Oakley; his father, David; his brother, Christopher; and his sisters, Kayleen, Nichole, Brendinha, and Brianna. He is preceded in death by his mother, Brenda.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Ward family home through the Gold Star Family Home Program.
