United States Army Specialist • Line of Duty Death: March 5, 2023
Virginia Beach Police Department Detective and United States Army Specialist Kurtis Vogel passed away on March 5, 2023 after his battle with service-related cancer.
Vogel was born in West Islip, New York and raised in Central Islip, New York along with his four siblings. Throughout his childhood, he loved to play video games, play baseball, and get into mischief. He and his wife, Brianne, met in high school and were later married.
Inspired by the events that took place on September 11, 2001, Vogel enlisted in the US Army in 2003. He loved the relationships he made, the bonds of brotherhood, and having the ability to help others. His goals were to become an Army Ranger, go to Airborne School, and become a detective. Throughout his honorable career, Vogel earned two Silver Crosses. After his service, he took after his father and began a career in law enforcement. He joined the Virginia Beach Police Department and proudly achieved his goal of becoming a detective. Vogel was unfortunately diagnosed with stage IV Colorectal Cancer, attributed to his time serving in the Army. He lost his battle in March of 2023.
Brianne currently resides in Virginia with her children, Kayden and Kaia. Together, they love to travel and explore new places. She strives to be the best mother to her children and cheers them on with their extracurricular activities. Additionally, Brianne is a sixth grade Social Studies teacher and is eager to be more involved within her own children’s schools. The gift of a mortgage-free home has taken an immense weight off of her shoulders. With her extra funds and time, she plans on pursuing a new career that allows her the freedom of being more of an active participant in her children’s lives. Finally, Brianne would like others to know that her husband was extremely dedicated to his family. He made sure to always make himself available for them. He was a loyal friend and passionate police officer.
