United States Air Force Staff Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: June 6, 2019
United States Air Force Staff Sergeant Joshua Rian Moore lost his life on June 6, 2019, in a tragic motor vehicle accident.
Moore grew up in Sumter, South Carolina, surrounded by the love and support of his close-knit family. He shared a special bond with his older brother, Chris, and the two had a playful and comical rapport. They often carried on entire conversations using movie quotes, a tradition that brought laughter to those around them. Moore was raised by his devoted mother, Elaine, who ensured he always had the support and guidance he needed. His grandparents, Jackie and Charles, also played an important role in his upbringing. His grandfather taught him the skills and values he carried throughout his life, from mechanics to fishing and hunting, as well as a deep appreciation for the outdoors.
On January 31, 2008, Moore enlisted in the United States Air Force, driven by a desire to forge a better future for himself. He was drawn to the opportunity to proudly serve his country, travel, and pursue an education. Throughout his service, Moore made a lasting impact on every unit he served alongside. He held his Airmen to a high standard while remaining a steady source of guidance and support. Moore was deeply respected by his colleagues. He profoundly influenced many Airmen, guiding them to success in their professional roles and offering advice for balancing service with home and family life. Throughout his distinguished career, Moore earned numerous awards and decorations in recognition of his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence.
Moore met his future wife, Angela, in July of 2005 when they were both 16 years old. Introduced through mutual friends, the two quickly formed a strong connection that grew into a lasting relationship and the foundation for the life they would build together. Some of Angela’s most cherished memories include the moment Moore asked her to marry him and the day they learned they were expecting their first child. While Angela remembers feeling nervous at the time, Moore remained calm and excited at the thought of becoming a father. When their daughters were born, Angela watched him fall in love with them instantly, embracing fatherhood with pride and devotion. Throughout his service, the family experienced six homecomings, each one a meaningful reminder of the love, resilience, and deep bond they shared, moments Angela continues to hold close to her heart.
Moore leaves behind a legacy of hard work, respect, humor, and a deep love for life. Known for his vibrant personality, he had a way of bringing energy and laughter wherever he went, often turning even the dullest day into something memorable. Friends and colleagues frequently share with Angela the deep love Moore had for his family, a devotion that was evident to everyone who knew him. Moore loved fiercely. While he could be strong-willed at times, his loyalty to those he cared about was unwavering. When Moore loved someone, he would move mountains and defend them with his whole heart. Above all, Moore was a devoted father and husband who made sure his family knew how deeply he loved them at every opportunity.
Today, Angela and their daughters continue to honor Moore’s memory in special ways. Each year on his birthday and angel-versary, they celebrate his life by sharing the girls’ favorite desserts and taking part in activities they believe he would have enjoyed. Angela also gathers with family and friends to raise a toast in his memory with his favorite whiskey. Moore’s name is always spoken with love and remembrance in their home. His legacy lives on through the stories and traditions his family and friends continue to share.
