Line of Duty Death: April 21, 2011

Sergeant John Paul Castro sustained fatal injuries after being struck by small arms fire in Paktika Province, Afghanistan on April 21, 2011. Castro was on his third tour overseas when his group was attacked, resulting in his death.

Castro was born and raised in Andrews, Texas alongside his two siblings. He was a high school athlete, playing baseball and soccer and was also part of his high school band. Castro enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors in his spare time. Above all else, Castro loved spending time with his family.

Castro enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2004 after graduating high school. He was an Infantryman and served with the Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). Castro was highly decorated having earned several awards during his military career, including two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained in Iraq.

Sergeant John Paul Castro is survived by his wife, Delia and two children, Natalie and Kamren.
