United States Army Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: January 20, 2018
United States Army Sergeant Jack Edward Stillman was a dedicated soldier who tragically passed away on January 20, 2018 due to service connected cancer.
Stillman grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, a joyful jokester and energetic child. As the youngest of three siblings, he shared a lively bond with his two older sisters. Their days were filled with games of hide-and-seek, slip ’n slides in the backyard, and bike rides through the neighborhood. Stillman also had a creative side and loved to draw. Some of his fondest memories came from family vacations to Emerald Isle, where the tradition of catching ghost crabs on the beach became a highlight—an experience he later cherished sharing with his own sons.
In January 2014, Stillman joined the Army. His decision to join the military came from a deep love for his family. As a young father, he wanted to provide stability and saw military service as both a duty and a way to build a strong foundation for his wife and children. Stillman’s sense of responsibility was matched by an unwavering commitment to those he loved. Shortly after enlisting, Stillman recognized his aspiration to pursue a long-term military career, aiming to serve for over two decades before retirement.
Stillman distinguished himself as an exceptional soldier, consistently demonstrating unwavering dedication. In September 2016, mere weeks prior to his cancer diagnosis, he achieved a significant milestone in military history, becoming the first soldier to earn all three awards, Iron Warrior Award, the Leadership Award and recognized as the Distinguished Honor Graduate, while completing the NCO Academy with a remarkable GPA of 99.33. It was during this rigorous course that Stillman discovered a lump. Despite experiencing discomfort, he persevered, completing the academy without realizing the internal battle his body was simultaneously enduring. Weeks later, the diagnosis of stage four cancer would unveil the silent struggle he was unknowingly waging while excelling in his military responsibilities.
Introduced through mutual friends, Stillman met his future wife, Alina, when they first connected online. What began as virtual conversations soon blossomed into a strong and supportive partnership. Together, they built a life grounded in love and shared purpose. Today, Alina and their two sons, Aiden Jack and Jackson Jayce, live in North Carolina. They give back to their community by volunteering at the local animal shelter and the Travis Manion Foundation. The boys are following in their father’s athletic footsteps, playing football, baseball, and wrestling. Inspired by her desire to help and heal, and by her experience as Stillman’s devoted caregiver, Alina has embarked on an inspiring journey to become a nurse. The unwavering trust Stillman placed in her during his battle with cancer continues to guide her, fueling her determination to fulfill this dream. Alina draws strength from his spirit, carrying his love and legacy into all she pursues, inspiring others as he inspired her.
