United States Army Captain • Line of Duty Death: March 6, 2024

United States Army Captain Edward Anderson tragically passed away due to service-connected cancer on March 6, 2024, an illness attributed to burn pit exposure during his service.

Anderson grew up in Dallas and attended Cistercian Preparatory School, where he developed a love for soccer, golf, and the Dallas Stars. He entered West Point in 2007 and went on to serve with distinction in the United States Army. Throughout his career, he was recognized for his exceptional dedication and leadership, earning numerous honors including the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, and the NATO Medal. He also received the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and earned the Air Assault Badge, reflecting a career marked by bravery, service, and unwavering commitment to his country.

Professionalism and dedication left a lasting impression on all who served alongside Anderson. Justin Mendoza, who worked with him in the military, reflected, “Ed had an exceptional talent for being under pressure. During his deployment to Afghanistan as an Intelligence Officer, he consistently provided the critical information we needed when it mattered most. His composure, expertise, and dedication elevated every task and mission, earning him the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him.”

A chance meeting at a dog park brought Anderson and his future wife, Rachel, together. They often joked that their dogs were responsible for bringing them into each other’s lives. The two quickly bonded over their shared love for their canine companions, a passion for staying active, and a similar sense of humor. One of Rachel’s most cherished memories is their elopement to Lake Tahoe, where they exchanged vows at sunrise on a mountain overlooking the lake. She also looks back fondly on the time they spent together during the COVID-19 shutdown, when the slower pace of life offered them unexpected moments to connect and simply enjoy being together.

Anderson’s presence enriched every gathering, leaving a lasting mark on all who knew him. He brought joy and entertainment to every room he entered, effortlessly filling it with warmth. Even throughout his cancer diagnosis, Anderson maintained a positive outlook and continued to show up fully as a devoted father, husband, friend, and coworker, facing each day with remarkable strength and determination. Each year on the anniversary of his passing, Rachel invites friends and family to share a photo of Anderson along with the story behind it, compiling these memories into a book for their son so that one day he can see the profound impact his father had on the lives of those around him. In gathering these memories, Rachel is creating a lasting tribute so their son will always know the joy, strength, and resilience that defined his father’s life.

United States Army Captain Edward Anderson is survived by his devoted wife, Rachel, and their beautiful son, Merritt.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Anderson family home through the Gold Star Family Home Program.
