United States Navy Chief Petty Officer • Line of Duty Death: June 11, 2022

United States Navy Chief Petty Officer Derrick Renard Demery tragically lost his life on June 11, 2022 to a thromboembolic event resulting from cancer.

Demery’s upbringing in Shreveport, Louisiana, was shaped by his close relationship with his mother, Elaine, and stepfather, David. As an only child, he found companionship and a sense of belonging in the kitchen, where he and his mother explored the joys of cooking and baking. His involvement in church fostered a sense of community and provided spiritual grounding. Demery’s natural athleticism was evident in his excellence in basketball and football, where he displayed agility, teamwork, and a competitive spirit. His passion for sports continued throughout his life, as he remained an avid fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Cowboys.

His journey into adulthood began with a stint in the Army Reserves, where he was introduced to the discipline and camaraderie of military life. This experience paved the way for his enlistment in the United States Navy on December 10, 2002. The Navy offered Demery the stability he sought and the opportunity to explore the world. One of his greatest accomplishments was being a member of the world-famous aerobatic team, The Blue Angels. His dedication and hard work did not go unnoticed, leading to his promotion to Chief Petty Officer. This role allowed him to share his knowledge and experience, mentoring hundreds of sailors, many of whom followed in his footsteps, achieving the ranks of Chief and Officer. Demery found immense satisfaction in guiding and shaping the next generation of naval leaders, leaving a lasting legacy within the Navy.

On October 31, 2000, at a Halloween party on the campus of the University of Orleans, Demery met the love of his life, Jonelle. From the moment she fell into his arms that night, she never stopped falling in love with him. Their connection was instant, and their love blossomed into something truly special. After dating for four years, they were married on September 23, 2005, surrounded by family and friends who affectionately called them “Bud” and “Rudy” because of their resemblance to the beloved characters from The Cosby Show. Demery’s greatest joy was the life he built with Jonelle, especially their three beautiful children—Elisha, Janae, and Alayna. He was a devoted father who always showed up, whether it was for school events, late-night talks, or quiet moments at home. His deep love for his family was matched only by his dedication to others through his service in the United States Navy. Demery lived with honor, compassion, and strength, touching countless lives with his unwavering presence and generous spirit.

Jonelle currently resides in Texas, where she continues to move forward with grace, strength, and a heart for service. Inspired by her own journey and the values she and Demery shared, she has found purpose in giving back to others, especially through volunteering at her local church. Her compassion and drive to make a difference reflect the resilience and kindness that define her. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has had a profound impact on Jonelle’s life, bringing her a renewed sense of stability, financial peace, and heartfelt gratitude. With this support, she has been able to focus on building a meaningful life grounded in purpose, service, and hope for what lies ahead.
