United States Army Sergeant Major • Line of Duty Death: July 20, 2016

United States Army Sergeant Major Barry Alan Brill passed away on July 20, 2016 after his battle with service-related cancer.

Brill was born in Bangor, Maine to his mother, Dianne Lane Putnam and later moved to Florida. Having had a passion for finance, Brill followed the stock market daily. He loved to trade stocks and bonds and share his knowledge with others. He was also a sub 3-hour marathoner and ultra runner, with a goal to participate in at least one race in every state as a representative for the US Army and the New York National Guard. Brill and his wife, Karin, were married in 2011 and began their beautiful life together before he was deployed to Afghanistan in 2012.

Brill began his military career with the US Army Military Police. During this time, he served in Fort Polk, Fort Hood, and Ansbach, Germany. Brill loved and appreciated the opportunity to travel around the world. While he was serving his country, Brill attended college and earned a Bachelors of Science in Organizational Leadership, later pursuing his Masters of Public Administration. He planned to finish his education and earn his MBA upon returning from deployment. Brill was selected as the US Army’s 2006 Male Athlete of the Year for being an endurance runner and cyclist. Additionally, he was a member of the All Army Sports Team and All Guard Marathon Team. In 2007, he joined the 104th MP as an instructor and coordinator for the Regional Training Institute on Camp Smith in Peekskill, New York. In 2012, Brill was deployed to Afghanistan with the New York Stability Transition Team where he earned a Bronze Star. He later returned to Afghanistan and served at the Kingston Armory as Battalion Operations NCO for the 104th MP BN, serving the southern tier of New York. Brill’s career spanned 22 honorable years, having received many awards and commendations for his service, including the Army Commendation Medal and Afghanistan Campaign Medal, among others. He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant Major.

United States Army Sergeant Major Barry Alan Brill is survived by his loving wife, Karin, his children, Liam and Sloane, his siblings, Bruce, Brian, Barbara, and Earl, his parents-in-law, Thelma and Graham, his sister-in-law, Linda, and many nieces and nephews.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage of the Brill family home through the Gold Star Family Home Program.
