United States Army National Guard Sergeant • Line of Duty Death: June 25, 2018

United States Army National Guard Sergeant Alexander Richard Kopf tragically passed away on June 25, 2018, due to a brain injury sustained from an IED attack in Afghanistan.

Kopf, the eldest of three children, grew up on various military bases, leaving a lasting impression on his father’s soldiers, superior officers, and fellow military families. Guided by the strong faith instilled by his parents and grandparents, he developed deep religious roots early in life. Much of his time was spent with his mother, who devoted herself to maintaining the home and nurturing her children. Under her guidance, he learned valuable life skills such as sewing, hunting, and woodworking. Kopf enjoyed accompanying his father to work, where he observed true leadership in action and learned what it takes to get the job done.

Building on a proud family legacy of service, Kopf honorably served as a third-generation Army veteran, dedicating himself to his country with courage, integrity, and strong leadership. His military experience shaped his character, instilling in him a deep sense of discipline, teamwork, and resilience—qualities that guided him throughout his life. After his service, he brought that same commitment to his civilian career at SCTelecom Communications, where he was highly regarded as both a reliable professional and the team’s lighthearted jokester. Known for his technical skill and passion for computer systems, he enjoyed building new technology and restoring older equipment to full functionality. Whether serving his country or working alongside his colleagues, Kopf inspired those around him through his loyalty, camaraderie, and genuine kindness.

While helping his cousin move, Kopf met his future wife, Vanessa. She was visiting her friend who happened to be his cousin. Vanessa had to leave for work, but Kopf stayed to help until she returned. They formed an immediate connection. Vanessa admired his kind heart and humorous personality. She will always treasure their memories, especially watching him embrace his role as a father to their son, Colton. One of her favorite memories is watching Kopf and Colton joyfully playing in a bounce house in their backyard. Kopf deeply desired the best for their son. They built a beautiful life together, raising Colton and their two dogs, a life that was tragically cut too short.

Kopf’s legacy lives on through his son, Colton, who embodies his father’s intelligence and charm. He leaves behind a wife and a devoted family—parents, grandparents, siblings, and nephews—who hold a lifetime of cherished memories filled with love and laughter. He deeply loved his family and his careers, both in the military and at SCTelecom Communications. Known for his loyalty, kindness, and compassion, he touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Kopf’s family continues to honor his memory through shared photos, videos, and stories, and by spending meaningful time together. His spirit prevails in the love he gave, the values he instilled, and the lives he forever changed.

United States Army National Guard Sergeant Alexander Richard Kopf is survived by his loving wife, Vanessa, and their beautiful son, Colton.
