United States Army Sergeant First Class • Line of Duty Death: November 24, 2023
United States Army Sergeant First Class Adam Scott McHugh tragically lost his life on November 24, 2023 from service-connected cancer.Â
McHugh was the middle child and shared a playful bond with his older brother and younger sister. He had a competitive spirit, often challenging his siblings to skill-based games. He was full of energy and curiosity—whether running cross-country and track, or snowboarding in high school, he approached every activity with enthusiasm. His love of adventure carried into his time as a Boy Scout, where he cherished camping trips and the thrill of earning merit badges. McHugh’s curiosity and drive extended to the classroom as well, where he excelled in advanced courses, always eager to learn and push himself further.Â
Following a long family lineage of military service, McHugh enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 26, 2007, following in the footsteps of his father, uncles, and grandparents. He found his calling, a place where his talents, dedication, and heart could shine. McHugh consistently helped fellow soldiers, whether with personal moves or emotional support during challenging times, including unit-level memorials after losing soldiers to suicide. He was a voice of reason, offering guidance without confrontation, and prioritized self-care while still leading and mentoring. His extensive military education included the Advanced Communications Signals Analysis Course and the Master Resiliency Course. His awards included the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Knowlton Award.Â
McHugh met his future wife, Chelsea, one unforgettable night at a bowling alley during cosmic bowling in high school. Chelsea remembers glancing over and thinking, “What in the world is this boy wearing?”—as McHugh stood out in his JNCO jeans, a hoodie covered in safety pins, and a beanie with his long hair spilling out from underneath. His unique style certainly caught her attention, but it was his easy smile and impressive bowling skills that truly made an impression. The next morning, fate brought them together again when McHugh stopped by on his morning run to say hello to a friend. Seeing him in the daylight, dressed in athletic clothes, Chelsea noticed his striking blue eyes for the first time and couldn’t help but ask, “Who is that guy with the gorgeous eyes?” From that moment on, their story began.Â
Together, McHugh and Chelsea built a beautiful life centered around love, laughter, and family. They went on to have two children, Chloe and Thomas, who were the heart of their world. The McHughs shared a love for family traditions, Ohio State football, and traveling—one of their favorite adventures being their unforgettable 10th-anniversary trip to Alaska. Their days were filled with simple, meaningful moments: dressing up together for family Halloween costumes, sharing quiet conversations over morning coffee, and creating memories that reflected their deep bond. McHugh treasured the time he spent with his children, from teaching Thomas to play Magic: The Gathering to sharing a tender father-daughter dance with Chloe in the hospital—moments that perfectly captured his gentle spirit and unwavering devotion as a husband and father.Â
Despite his introverted nature, McHugh had a remarkable ability to connect deeply with others—whether over a game of Magic: The Gathering, a shared love of running, thoughtful conversations over coffee, or computer games. He found peace in life’s simple joys, especially long walks on the beach, where he could slow down and share heartfelt conversations with Chelsea. A lifelong learner, McHugh’s passion for knowledge shone brightest through his love of mathematics. And of all his pursuits, none brought him more contentment than the simple pleasure of a well-earned nap. His 16 years of service in the U.S. Army reflected his deep sense of duty and selflessness. McHugh served with honor and bravery, embodying the true spirit of a soldier devoted to his country and others. Even in passing, his generosity endured—through the selfless decision to donate his body to science, a final reflection of his enduring desire to help others and leave the world better than he found it.Â
McHugh was more than a soldier, more than a colleague, more than a friend. He was a husband who loved with his whole heart, a father who beamed with pride at every little thing his children did, and a man whose loyalty and integrity left a mark on everyone around him. Chelsea continues to raise their children with the same values McHugh instilled in them—values rooted in love, kindness, and integrity, with help from his amazing parents. The family still celebrates McHugh’s birthday and their anniversaries, keeping him close in everything they do. McHugh’s legacy is not only in the life he lived but in the lives he touched—the laughter he shared, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely. He will be missed, remembered, and cherished forever.Â
