New York State Police • Line of Duty Death: March 31, 2022
New York State Police Major Rodrick Charles Covington Sr. passed away on March 31, 2022 from an illness stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
Covington was born and raised in The Bronx, New York. His parents, Charles and Mary, raised him and his sister, Brenda, to be Christians and responsible citizens. Covington excelled through school, having been inducted into the National Honor Society in high school and later graduating from Fordham University with a degree in Finance. During his free time, Covington could be found playing the saxophone, reading books, and watching movies. Additionally, he was selected to be the president of the Youth Usher Board at his local church. He and his wife, Jackie, met at church in 1979 and were later married in September of 1985. The pair had five beautiful children together.
Inspired by his father’s military service, Covington aspired to be a New York State Trooper. He joined the New York State Police Academy in October of 1981, beginning his law enforcement career. His ambitious personality aided in Covington’s ability to remain a dedicated professional, Major, and first responder. He never fell short of providing excellent service to his community. Following his courageous service on site at the World Trade Center, Covington was diagnosed with a 9/11-related bladder cancer, resulting in his premature passing.
Jackie currently resides in New York. She enjoys spending time with her friends, frequenting the theater, and watching movies. Family reunions and vacations are very meaningful for her, as she adores spending time with her children and extended family. Additionally, Jackie is a caregiver for her father, Wharton. She describes it as a blessing to be able to help and tend to his needs. During her free time, Jackie is an active member of the church where she and Covington first met, where she serves as an Usher on the Adult Usher Board. In the future, she is excited for her children to get married and continue their father’s legacy. With the financial stress of a mortgage lifted from her shoulders, Jackie is able to focus on her children as she and her family navigate their new normal. Finally, she would like others to know that her husband provided his family with unconditional love, was a great provider, and was extraordinarily proud to be part of the New York State Police and a 9/11 First Responder.
New York State Police Major Rodrick Charles Covington Sr. is survived by his wife, Jackie, and four children. He is preceded in death by his son, Eric.
