Michael Bernstein

Philadelphia Firefighter • Line of Duty Death: March 20, 2019

Philadelphia Firefighter Michael Bernstein, 46, passed away on March 20, 2019 after suffering a medical emergency while on duty at the Philadelphia International Airport.

During his 22-year career, Bernstein was assigned to several engines and ladders throughout  Philadelphia.

He left behind his wife, Catherine, and three children, Michael, Victoria, and Jacob.

“When we lost Mike, I lost my husband and my best friend, and the kids lost their Dad and their best friend. He was my protector, I knew as long as I had him in my corner the kids and I would be ok. Needless to say, when he died we were crushed and I was not sure I would be able to go on without him. However, for the kids, I knew I had no choice. What this foundation is doing for us is amazing. Not sure if I would be able to do it on my own. I will never forget what this foundation has done for us,” said Catherine.

Before joining the Philadelphia Fire Department, Bernstein served his country in the U.S. Navy.

In honor of his service to his country, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Fallen First Responder Home Program paid off the mortgage on his home on Veterans Day 2020.
