New Jersey State Police, New Jersey • Line of Duty Death: May 5, 2024

New Jersey State Trooper II Marcellus Bethea collapsed and lost his life on May 5, 2024 while training to join the department’s elite response team, the Technical Emergency and Mission Specialist Team. He was training at the State Police Headquarters in Ewing, New Jersey, at the time of his death. He was 33 years old and had served for eight years. 

In his youth, Bethea always prioritized service, whether it was helping others or assisting someone who was struggling. He participated in the New Jersey State Police Trooper Youth Week at Northern Burlington Regional High School, graduating in 2009. In 2013, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Justice from Rowan University. He joined the New Jersey State Police in January of 2016. He served in Troop “A” at the Bridgeton Station, Buena Vista Station, Belmar Station, and the Atlantic City Expressway Station. Bethea was later assigned to the Executive Protection Unit, where he was a member of Governor Phil Murphy’s protection detail. His last assignment was at Troop “D” Moorestown Station. He was driven by a passion for service, his dedication to helping others and a deeply-held belief that he had the physical and mental stamina to protect and serve. His personality drew people in. Bethea never compromised his values, even when it was difficult. He had unwavering integrity that uplifted and inspired everyone around him.

Bethea was a devoted husband to Katarzyna “Kate” and a loving father to Bella. They made their home in Florence, New Jersey. The family enjoyed many unforgettable road trips together. His passions were deeply rooted in faith, family, and service. 

New Jersey State Trooper II Marcellus Bethea is survived by his loving wife, Kate, and their daughter, Bella.
