New York City Police Department • Line of Duty Death: October 16, 2014

NYPD Detective Luis Fernandez died on October 16, 2014, as a direct result of illnesses he contracted after inhaling toxic materials as he participated in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. 

Detective Fernandez joined the New York City Police Department on April 30, 1991. During his 23-year career, Detective Fernandez served in the 9 Precinct, the Narcotics Division, Narcotics Borough Manhattan North, the Emergency Service Unit, and Emergency Service Squad 6. 

Detective Fernandez made 600 arrests and was recognized six times for Excellent Police Duty; twice for Meritorious Police Duty; and twice with a Commendation.

He left behind his wife and two daughters.
