Fairway Police Department, Kansas • Line of Duty Death: August 7, 2023

On August 7, 2023, Police Officer Jonathan “Jonah” Alejandro Salazar-Oswald passed away from injuries he sustained after being shot in the line of duty.

Salazar-Oswald was born and raised in San Diego, California. His childhood was good and peaceful. Having a loving relationship with his mother, she raised him and homeschooled him while being a single parent. Salazar-Oswald loved playing sports such as soccer, surfing, skateboarding, and Jiu Jitsu. He also loved playing video games and spending time with friends. In August of 2010, he and his future wife, Hanna, met at the ages of 15 and 16 while at a homeschool camp in Oregon. They met at the airport prior to camp starting, and quickly became “camp sweethearts.”

Salazar-Oswald always had an interest in the military and law enforcement and had a dream of joining the Army and becoming a police officer. In May of 2017, he graduated from the Police Academy and enlisted in the Army Reserves a few months later. When he returned from basic training/AIT in September of 2018, Salazar-Oswald obtained his first job as a police officer. Having felt the call to be a protector, he loved the nature of his job. It truly was a fulfilling career for him. His ultimate goals were to always have meaning in his job and believing in the work he was doing. While in the Academy, Salazar-Oswald was awarded with Top Gun and Top Defensive Tactic for his class. Later on, he became a firearms instructor at Fairway PD.

Currently, Hanna resides in the home she and her husband purchased together. She loves to read and write fiction novels, grow flowers in her garden, and spend time with their children. Receiving the gift of a mortgage-free home from Tunnel to Towers allows Hanna fulfill Salazar-Oswald’s wish, which was to stay at home and raise their children full time and homeschool them. Having served six honorable years, Salazar-Oswald will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

Police Officer Jonathan “Jonah” Alejandro Salazar-Oswald is survived by his wife, Hanna, and their two children.
