Broken Bow Fire Department, Nebraska • Line of Duty Death: September 23, 2021

Broken Bow Fire Department firefighter James Bissonette died on September 23, 2021 from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and raised in Merna, Nebraska, Bissonette graduated from Anselmo Merna High School, where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Michaela, and later enrolled at Mid Plains Community College to study Automotive Technology. Bissonette also had a passion for agriculture, and spent much of his young life working in the industry. He and Michaela were married in 2011 after dating for seven years, and welcomed to the world their two children, Ella and Jack. 

In Bissonette’s adult life he was passionate about volunteering his time with the Broken Bow fire department and working as a driver for the ambulance, with a passion for helping people whenever he could. Bissonette was a dedicated family man who was an attentive father and devoted husband. He is remembered for his playful sense of humor, contagiously positive attitude, and integrity, always firmly adhering to his values.
