Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department, Florida • Line of Duty Death: April 13, 2024

Fire Engineer Heath O’Shea of the Jacksonville, Florida Fire & Rescue Department was at work at the fire station when he suffered a medical emergency on April 12, 2024. Despite life-saving efforts by the JFRD personnel and the medical professionals at the hospital, he died the next day, on April 13, 2024. He was 44 years old and had served with the department for 20 years.

O’Shea was born in Pensacola, Florida to Christopher O’Shea and the late Nancy O’Shea. He was lovingly raised by Christopher and Cathy O’Shea as part of a blended family. His siblings included Evan, Joseph, Joshua, and the late Burt. This upbringing played a pivotal role in shaping his remarkable character. 

O’Shea began his career with the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department in 2003, calling it “the best job ever.” Over his 20 year career, he rose to the rank of engineer and achieved his dream assignment on Tanker 54. He saved countless lives, delivered at least eight babies, and rescued several kittens along the way. He was always ready and willing to help friends and family members. He was a man of strength with a vibrant personality who was known for his compassion and his sense of humor. 

O’Shea and his wife, Melanie, shared nearly 17 years of companionship and 15 years of marriage. They shared their early years from grade school at Christ the King to Bishop Kenny High School. They raised two children, Simon and Lily. He had a thirst for knowledge, reading books, watching documentaries and listening to podcasts. He had many unique interests, including the great outdoors, all genres of music, unique beers, exotic teas and Dad jokes. He had many roles in life, including husband, father, son, brother, uncle and fire engineer. His love for his family, friends and his community was endless. 

Fire Engineer Heath O’Shea of the Jacksonville, Florida Fire & Rescue Department Heath O’Shea is survived by his loving wife, Melanie, their children, Simon and Lily, his parents, Christopher and Cathy, his brothers, Evan, Joseph, Joshua, and the late Burt, and many other cherished family members.
