Montgomery County Fire Department, Maryland • Line of Duty Death: April 17, 2010

On April 17, 2010, Fire Captain Francis William Hollern passed away from a heart attack.

Hollern was born in Pontiac, Michigan and was raised in Cumberland, Maryland. As a child, he enjoyed playing sports, such as soccer, or working with his hands and building things. Later on, he and his wife, Cynthia, met online and shared an instant connection. The pair were eventually married and had four children together.

Hollern wanted to become a first responder because he always had a passion for helping others. On November 30, 1980, Hollern joined the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service. Throughout his extensive career, Hollern held numerous roles such as paramedic, Lieutenant, Captain, and Station Commander.

Cynthia and her children currently reside in Florida. She aims to help her children become the best they can and watch them succeed in life to their fullest. In the future, she is excited to have a second chance at life and be able to see her children grow up and meet her grandchildren. The donation of a mortgage-free home from the Tunnel to Towers Foundation has helped the Hollern family immensely. Cynthia can now focus on her health and know that her children will always have a home. Finally, she would like others to know that although her husband was a very kind and giving person and never failed to help others, he loved his family above all else.

Fire Captain Francis William Hollern is survived by his wife, Cynthia, their three sons, Sean, Kegan, Connor, and their daughter, Virginia.
