New York City Police Department, New York • Line of Duty Death: November 28, 2005

On November 28, 2005, NYPD Detective Dillon H. Stewart sustained fatal gunshot wounds while he and his partner attempted to pull over a vehicle that had run a red light. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop, resulting in a chase. Stewart and his partner caught up to the perpetrator’s vehicle and the suspect began shooting out the passenger side window, striking Stewart in the chest. Stewart was taken to Kings County Hospital where he later passed due to the severity of his injuries.

Stewart was born in Jamaica and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up with his maternal grandmother, mother, and sister. Stewart had a happy childhood and enjoyed being a part of the Boy Scouts, where he learned leadership skills and the importance of commitment to his community, which ultimately inspired him to become a police officer. He and his wife, Leslyn, met and after sharing an undeniable connection, were later married.

Stewart joined the New York Police Department in 2000. He enjoyed working with and protecting the people in his community and took pride in all the good work he had done. He was a part of a conditions team that resulted in successful crime prevention, which he enjoyed very much.

Leslyn currently resides in New York with her daughters and Stewart’s family. She enjoys traveling and is dedicated to educating herself and her community about public health initiatives. Leslyn actively participates in her community, serving as a member of her school district and various board administrations. She looks forward to watching her daughters grow and develop into independent individuals. Leslyn is grateful for the support from Tunnel to Towers, which alleviates financial concerns and represents a significant investment in her daughters’ future success.
