Smithfield Fire Department, Rhode Island • Line of Duty Death: April 2, 2024

Firefighter Craig Garrett lost his life on April 2, 2024, after a tireless battle with occupational cancer. He suffered from Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor, a rare, aggressive cancer. He was 48 years old at the time of his death, and had served with the Smithfield Fire Department in Smithfield, Rhode Island, for seven years. He was also an Air Force Veteran, having served for two years.

Garrett, a 1993 graduate of Pilgrim High School, was a state champion wrestler. He joined the United States Air Force upon graduation, serving in Operation Desert Storm. After an honorable discharge, he continued his calling to serve others by joining the Smithfield Fire Department. He was a founding member of the Health & Physical Fitness Program at the fire department. Among his proudest achievements was being the founder of the 76 Foundation. This Foundation supports pediatric and firefighter cancer patients and their families. He helped make a difference in the lives of these children and the firefighters who were facing extraordinary challenges. The Foundation, which continues its mission, is a testament to Garrett’s vision and dedication.

Garrett married his wife of 15 years, Margaret, and together they had three children, Molly, Charles and Caroline. His most cherished role was that of being a father to his children. In his free time, he enjoyed being out on the water, either fishing or enjoying a boat ride with his family and friends. Above all, family and friends were blessings in his life.

Firefighter Craig Garrett is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, his children, Molly, Charles and Caroline, his parents, Clifford and JoAnn, his brothers, Michael, Clifford and David, and many other cherished family members and friends.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Garrett family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
