West Virginia State Police • Line of Duty Death: June 2, 2023

West Virginia State Police Sergeant Cory Maynard passed away on June 2, 2023 due to fatal gunshot wounds sustained while responding to a shooting call.

Maynard was born in South Williamson, Kentucky and raised in Turkey Creek, Kentucky. He loved spending time with his family and friends and listening to bluegrass music. Maynard also loved old cars, having even restored a 1958 Chevy with his father. He loved the outdoors, including spending many summers at his grandparents’ lake house in Tennessee. Maynard met his wife, Rachel, in seventh grade, dating on and off all throughout middle and high school. They even got their first jobs together working at a local grocery store at sixteen years old. They were later married and brought two children into the world.

In October 2007, Maynard enrolled in the police academy with aspirations to become a state trooper and make a difference in his community and the state of West Virginia. Maynard joined the police force with the desire to learn everything he possibly could, and was a hardworking and dedicated new trooper. A proud American patriot, Maynard served 15 years with the West Virginia State Police. He continued to stay focused on work and earned multiple service awards and promotions, including Trooper of the year (statewide) in 2012 and the Lifesaving Award in 2015.

While responding to a shots fired call, Maynard was ambushed on arrival and sustained fatal gunshot wounds. He responded to the call with a younger officer, who states that Maynard saved his life.

Rachel currently resides in Charleston, West Virginia with her children. She and her children like to keep busy, occupied by numerous sports, summer camp, and time with family and friends. Rachel is also trying to find a way to give back and help others in need, after seeing how many people have shown up for her in her time of need. Receiving a mortgage free home from Tunnel to Towers will make a huge impact on their family. Rachel says the financial support will make it possible for her to work less and be able to spend more time with her children. Lastly, Rachel would like others to know that her husband was a true hero, going above and beyond everyday to help others. He would never let any of his guys go on calls alone and cared for them deeply, as evidenced by his final sacrifice. She hopes her children will continue to grow up being incredibly proud of their father’s work, sacrifices and love for everyone. It is important to Rachel that everyone know what a dedicated, genuine individual her husband was, and that he loved his family more than anything.

West Virginia State Police Sergeant Cory Maynard is survived by his wife, Rachel, and two children, Zoe and Finnegan.
