Independence Police Department, Missouri, • Line of Duty Death: February 29, 2024
Independence Police Department, Missouri, Police Officer Cody Allen was shot and killed, along with a Jackson County Circuit Court employee Drexel Mack on February 29, 2024. Two other officers who were shot recovered from their injuries. The court workers were serving an eviction when the shooting began. After a request for immediate assistance, officers from the Independence Police Department arrived and they were fired upon. A male suspect was taken into custody and transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Officer Allen was 35 years old at the time of his death.
Allen was born and raised in Odessa, Missouri. His parents were Tim and Loretta Allen, and he had an older sister and a younger sister. They lived in the country, on 20 acres of land. Allen graduated from Odessa High School in 2007 and began his journey in law enforcement. He served with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department before going to the Grandview Police department, where he served for six years. In 2017, he joined the Independence Police Department and served with pride and professionalism. He was well respected by all he worked with and mentored. He received the Bronze Award for Valor in 2015 for trying to save an infant from a house fire. He was also a DRE (Drug Recognition Expert) and received extensive training, helping to keep impaired drivers off the road. After his death, his wife accepted the Three Acts of Valor Award in his honor.
Early in his career, Allen met his future wife, Danyel, through a mutual friend. She was starting Nursing School and was instantly attracted to his confidence and sharp humor. They always had a mutual respect for each other and their careers. They married and went on to have two children, Brody Ray and Adley Mae. His children and his wife were everything to him. He was an amazing father who left a legacy of strength, strong values, integrity and resilience.
Independence Police Department, Missouri, Police Officer Cody Allen is survived by his loving wife, Danyel, children, Brody Ray and Adley Mae, parents, Tim and Loretta Allen, sisters, CamBrae and Corey Lynn, and many other cherished family members and friends.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage of the Allen family home through the Fallen First Responder Home Program.
