CAL FIRE – California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection • Line of Duty Death: June 26, 2021

CAL FIRE Apparatus Engineer Christopher Wurster passed away on June 26, 2021 after a lengthy battle with occupational cancer.

Wurster was born in Panorama City, California and raised in Lancaster, California. At a young age, Wurster found an interest in mechanics. While working as a motorcycle mechanic in San Diego, he met his wife, Krystle, in 2002. They were married in 2012 and welcomed two children into the world.

In 2007, Wurster decided to begin his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. Once completing the Yuba College Fire Academy in 2007, he was hired by Marysville Fire/CAL FIRE as a resident volunteer. A year later, he was hired by CAL FIRE and assigned to Station 42 in North San Juan. In 2009, Wurster was diagnosed with melanoma cancer. With much treatment, he went into remission and was able to continue his career. Five years later, he officially beat it. In 2013, Wurster transferred to Nevada City Station 40 and worked there until he was promoted to fire apparatus engineer in 2020. Wurster unfortunately received news that his melanoma returned while attending the CAL FIRE Company Officer Academy. Prior to his passing, he was hired as a fire apparatus engineer at the Grass Valley Air Attack Base but was never able to begin his time there.

Wurster is remembered for his positive attitude and zest for life, taking every opportunity to enjoy time with his family and friends. Amongst his fellow firefighters, he is remembered for his dedication to his job and community.
