While reporting in Aurora on police incidents, Shields met many officers, which inspired him to become a police officer himself and help others. In 2005, he was sworn in as an Aurora Police Officer with the Aurora Police Department. He loved every minute of being an officer, making connections, and helping the community. He was very receptive and attentive to others. In addition to serving as a police officer, he volunteered at his children’s schools and chaperoned many field trips. Shields later obtained a second Master’s degree in Biblical Studies from Moody Theological Seminary in May of 2021. He served an honorable 17 years before sadly losing his life to COVID-19.
