Broward County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Benjamin Nimtz of Deerfield Beach, Florida, was killed in a two-vehicle crash while responding to a domestic dispute call on July 21, 2019. His patrol car collided with a pickup truck in an intersection. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Deputy Nimtz was 30 years old and had served in the United States Army as a Sergeant in the 4th Infantry. He was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and was honorably discharged in 2011.

Nimtz grew up in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. He was the middle child of three. He had an older sister, Tiffany, and a younger brother, Tommy. Tommy died from Cystic Fibrosis at the age of 20. His parents were Timothy and Kathy. Nimtz graduated from Waukesha South High School in 2007. While there, he played baseball and football, and participated in wrestling. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin.

Nimtz met his future wife, Emelie, in 2011, while attending a friend’s wedding in California. She was a bridesmaid and he was a groomsman. It was love at first sight, and after 10 months of a long-distance relationship, Emelie joined him in Colorado to begin their life together. They went on to have two children together, Elizah and Tommy. The family loved spending quality time together on road trips, at concerts, cooking and baking, and going out to family breakfast every Saturday. He truly loved being a father and they knew exactly how much he loved them.

Nimtz began his career with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office in 2018, receiving the Academic Excellence Award upon graduation. He was assigned to the Deerfield Beach district. He had served 16 months when he lost his life in the line of duty. Although his time was short there, he made lifelong friends who shared his love for serving the community.
