Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, California • Line of Duty Death: April 20, 2024
On October 10, 2023, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Sheriff Alfredo “Freddy” Flores and another deputy were inside a mobile shooting range at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, California, participating in mandatory training. The range was built inside a 53-foot semi-trailer. While training, an equipment malfunction ignited a fire. They both suffered severe burns before being rescued by fellow deputies and transported to a local hospital. After a valiant fight for recovery, Deputy Flores succumbed to his injuries six months later, on April 20, 2024. He served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for 22 years and was 51 years old.
Flores graduated from Academy Class #327 and was assigned to several units during his tenure. He served the North County Correctional Facility, Operation Safe Jails, Altadena Station and, most recently, the Sylmar Juvenile Court at Court Services West Bureau. He made a unique contribution to all these assignments. Flores was well respected in the Department and in the community. His passing left a huge void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
